Hike Time Calculator & Turnaround Planner

About this calculator

A hike planner that shows its working instead of giving one unexplained number.

It is built and maintained by Marcio. Marcio builds small, single-purpose web tools that run entirely in your browser. This one exists because walkers keep asking the same two questions in outdoors forums: 'how long will this route take?' and 'when should I turn back so I am off the hill before dark?'

The calculator uses three published methods (Naismith's rule, Langmuir's descent correction and Tobler's hiking function) and shows them side by side, because they disagree on many real routes and a single figure hides that. Sunrise, sunset and civil dusk come from the NOAA solar position equations, calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded.

The site is a planning aid. It does not know about weather, route conditions, access rules or your fitness, and it cannot alert anyone if you are late. Please read the article on turnaround and call-for-help times for its limits.
